Tootin' Indiana's horns*

I previously wrote about the audition process for the 3rd trumpet of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. The local paper had a follow-up article in yesterday's edition, though it was in the Arts section rather than the front page. Besides giving some more details about incoming trumpeter Tom Hooten (including his upcoming wedding), it also highlights 1st Lt. Michelle A. Rakers, University of Evansville graduate and new assistant director of "The President's Own" Marine Band. She is the first female conductor for this group, reflecting the sad state of gender politics both in military life and in the conducting world. But hopefully Lt. Rakers will have the opportunity to be a role model for future band directors of any gender.

*I picked the title just to have an excuse to write "Tootin'."
