Musicobracketology

As I sometimes do, I have filled out the March Madness brackets.  Since I know nothing about basketball, I have picked the teams based on their music programs.  Here are my choices.  IU is lucky the University of Rochester is not Division I!

I think UC could take FSU. :)

Basketball-wise, or music-wise?

New Mexico over Louisville? I dunno man, they've developed a strong Composition MM at Louisville...

also, Colorado St. over Missouri? I know C State has a decent program, and Mizzou isn't the conservatory (and UMKC is D1, so i can't complain too much, even though our basketball team stinks so we'll never hit the bracket LOL.). I dunno, that's a tough matchup. But Mizzou has the Esterhazy Quartet...that's a pretty solid weapon. Toss in their summer program (featuring Alarm Will Sound)with the New Music Initiative at the school, i gotta say C State has a tough one! Should be a solid bout!

and Cincinnati vs. Florida State. Man, that's a tough game. another one i'd really like to see! I'd root for Cincinnati, but that's entirely from their strong trombone department and electronic music comp. LOL

as for Purdue vs. St. Mary's...it's another toss up to me. Purdue has a lot of solid ensembles and good research in several areas, but...no major. St. Mary's has a "Performing Arts Degree with an Emphasis in Music." Not sure what that means, but i bet they'd have a fighting chance, though with fewer applicants behind it, who knows the power of the group. Still, it's an interesting match!

Oh, and i think Belmont may be able to take Kansas. It's much more of a "pop music" program, but they have solid results. then again, a student from Kansas did just win the SEAMUS Student competition! oh, so many factors!

This was fun!

Music-wise. I have zero knowledge of either basketball team.

It was interesting looking at some ranking sites and seeing both the discrepancies, and how even different programs get separated out. Theory vs. Musicology, undergrad performance vs. grad.

John, I think the quality of music performed and talked about at Purdue will beat St. Mary's, which naturally will translate to the court! You may be right about Missouri, though.

Andrea, I'd pay to see their opera teams compete.

One of my good friends went to FSU for undergrad and doesn't think much of the graduate program there. To be fair, I think they could beat us in choral conducting. But not opera.

Touché!

So far I am 2-0.

My South bracket is half-crushed, though I beat President Obama in correctly picking Colorado over UNLV. Same with my West bracket, correctly picking Florida over Virginia, but missing some others. But unlike the president, I have Michigan State beating Missouri, so I could still get some points on him there. In the East bracket, I need Wisconsin to win to stay alive. And I should've listened to Andrea about Cincy being better than FSU. But the main problem is that Michigan sucked. I had them going all the way to the finals, so unless Indiana wins it all, my situation is hopeless. Hopeless, I say!
